Daily calcium intake during life cycle

Adequate calcium intake is important during the entire life cycle, but especially in youth, when peak bone mass is achieved, minimizing the risk and progress of metabolic bone diseases later in life. DRI of calcium (Dietary Reference Intake) for children and adolescents is 1300 mg, for college students 1000 mg, for people older than 50 years 1200 mg and it is recommended that patients with osteoporosis achieve a daily intake of at least 1300 mg. The investigation was carried out among 233 children, 256 adolescents, 663 students, 276 women with osteoporosis and 438 elderly people. A completely quantified Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used as a dietary assessment method for children, adolescents and students. For women with osteoporosis and for elderly residents of nursing homes quantified FFQ were used, containing only foods high in calcium. The average daily calcium intake in children was 830.3 mg, i.e. 63.9 % AI and in adolescents 910.2 mg, i.e. 70.0 % AI. In students a higher daily calcium intake was determined (1518.0 mg, i.e. 151.8 % AI). In women with osteoporosis the daily calcium intake was 1234.7 mg, i.e. 95.0 % AI, but in elderly residents of nursing homes intake was only 473.2 mg, i.e. 39.4 % AI. Results of this study showed that only students achieved a higher than recommended calcium intake, and the lowest intake was observed in elderly residents of nursing homes.
