Differences in enzymes (biomarkers) activities in fish after cage exposure in Drava and Danube river (Croatia)
Two common biomarkers (etoxyresorufin-O-deetylase (EROD)) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE)) were measured in prussian and common carp (Carrasius auratus gibelio, Cyprinus carpio). Fish were cage-exposed on River Drava, River Danube and Kopacki rit (reference). Maximum significant decrease of AChE activity was 34.4% and maximum increase of EROD activity was 10-fold. Water analysis (GCMS, AA) showed that on some locations specific AChE inhibitors were not detected although the inhibition was statistically significant. Complementary laboratory experiments using 3-methylcolantrene (EROD inducer) and malathion (AChE inhibitor) shower that these two biomarkers should be combined to provide better quality of biomonitoring.
