Role of solid control equioment in reducing drilling waste volume

Removal of drilled solids from drilling fluid has been a problem since the introduction of rotary drilling rigs. Operators and contractors agree that the problem of solid removal from drilling mud has become more acute in recent years. Proper set up and sequence of mechanical control equipment is essential to a successful solids removal program. Failure of an upstream unit can result in overloading and decreasing efficiency of downstream equipment. Proper sequencing includes returning the desired fraction of the processed mud to the next downstream pit and corresponding piece of equipment. When this is not done, the use of the equipment is less effective. Application of effective solid control equipment and efficient drilled solids removal reduces mud consumption and cost, and can enhance drilling performance by providing cleaner muds with a minimum low gravity solids content. Good solids control techniques reduce the amount of waste by providing cleaner discharges and less mud to dispose at the end of the well. Deeper drilling, rising drilling costs, and increasingly more stringent governmental regulation demand the use of the closed-loop fluids processing system as an efficient and economical method of solids control. Closed-loop system is composed of several pieces of mechanical equipment, each installed in its proper place with all required auxiliary equipment correctly sized and positioned. With the possibility of more severe future regulations, the need for a drilling fluids processing system which can limit or possibly even eliminate the problem of liquid waste-mud disposal has become evident to the drilling industry. A great number of areas are working under restrictions in regard to reserve pit size, waste-mud disposition, and time limits for restoring drilling sites after completion of drilling operations.
