Becoming Teachers in a Learning Organization: Towards Ethically Responsible Practice
Becoming Teachers in a Learning Organization: Towards Ethically Responsible Practice Summary This paper is an attempt to consider teacher education institutions from the perspective of a new, significantly changed paradigm, as well as to contribute to the problem of symptomatic global trends for teacher education and educational reality. In this context we analysed factors determining the realization of ethically responsible practice in teacher education. Special emphasis is placed on the concept of the learning organization, introduced from industry and economy into the academic culture at the beginning of the nineties, whereby we define it as an organization which is constantly developing, changing and adapting, using knowledge for its own growth, above all through investing in human potential. Educational institutions are facing one of the most important challenges – finding their place in the society of knowledge, ensuring effectiveness and quality and simultaneously undergoing a process of continuous learning. Some basic approaches and theoretical assumptions of the transformation of teacher education institutions into learning organizations are critically examined, focusing especially upon the ethics of responsibility. The authors are also researching the opportunities and problems that Croatian teacher education institutions encounter in trying to realize the learning organization concept and an ethically responsible practice. In the authors’ opinion, the acknowledgement and achievement of lifelong learning, the intensive linking with external social subjects, the introduction of open communication with equal rights for every participant in the educational process, the enhancement of the quality of culture, the increased consciousness for responsibility in a collegial and individual manner are some of the essential presumptions for an ethically responsible practice.
