Writing skill of secondary school leavers
In this diploma paper we first discussed theoretical aspects of writing skill and writing assessment, and then we focused on the study that was part of a national research project English Language in Croatia. We were interested in making inferences about the secondary school leavers' writing abilities. We tested their task achievement ability, vocabulary and grammar knowledge, as well as textual knowledge. According to the research results, the following could be inferred: Croatian pupils have problems in writing a formal letter in English ; Croatian foreign language teachers pay much more attention to teaching their pupils English grammar than enriching the pupils' vocabulary knowledge. We stress that even though acquiring a foreign language grammar is very important for the development of the writing skill, developing a large scale of rich vocabulary is important as well.
