A proposal for protocol safety elements between the publisher and the printing press in the XML technology environment

The transfer of important documents or document parts between the publisher and the printing press via the public web Internet may be protected by some of the known tools such as Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) or Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions /S/MINME). In the same manner the open communication between the listed participants may be protected by some of the known protocols: Transport Layer Secutity (TLS), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or IP Secure (IPSEC). It is characteristic for all the listed tools that the cryptosecurity is made on the level of the whole document and that the document is encripted as a whole by going through the secure connection. As XML is becoming a standard in the publishing and printing environment, and the goal being simple application and system flexibility, it is necessary to build a security system based on XML technology. By implementing the XML digital signature (XMLDSIG) for authentification purposes, XML technology would be applied in the security system. Besides authentification on the level of the whole document, the XML digital signature may be applied to certain parts of a document, so that the users, depending on the authorization level might have insight into the approved document parts. This paper proposes how to implement XMLDSIG into the publisher's and the printing work's computer and communication system.
