Surface waves in the southern Adriatic area
On the basis of ten-year measurements (1978-1987) of elements of wind-generated surface waves in the southern Adriatic area, it is possible to give some basic characteristics of these parameters of the developed sea states. From the recorded data, 20 situations with the developed sea states were singled out and analyzed. This paper shows the results of a simple statistic analysis, and some characteristics of the surface wave spectra in the above mentioned situations. It also gives the results of the calculation of extreme return values of wave heights for the period od 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years. Maximum wave height in 10-year period had value of 9.2 m, while maximum wave height estimated using theory of extremes is 10.2 m, what is within the standard error, thus it describes well the empirical data.
