Problem Solving by AI: Logical programming vs. Genetic algorithms
The purpose of this paper is to present two approaches to problem solving. First approach requires detailed description of the problem in order to search for the solution. This approach is usually referred to as the white-box principle. Second approach, known as the black-box principle, relies on observations of input and output values to iteratively generate solution. Both approaches are demonstrated on a time-tabling problem. The results obtained are compared and guidelines on selection of the appropriate approach depending on the characteristics of the problem are proposed.
Problem solving; decision making; logical programming; genetic algorithms; time-tabling problem.
