MPEG-2 Video Transmission in Multimedia Broadband Networks

Development of high speed network technologies has enabled delivery of digital video in network based systems. Two key technologies will enable this integration: compression of digital video data and broadband networks. In this paper we discuss problems that arise in MPEG-2 delivery over ATM networks. First, selection of service class is discussed. Several possibilities of service categories are described. Then, different requirements that have to be met in order to provide for reliable service are discussed. We consider the effects of bandwidth requirements, BER and CLR, CDV and delay on MPEG-2 TS delivery, and how they have to be handled in ATM networks.
