Comparative Cabin Noise Analysis in Light Aircraft and in Cars
In order to be permitted to participate in traffic, road vehicles as well as aircraft have to comply with homologation recommendations. In the EU the homologation procedure for vehicles is governed by EC "road map", while the aircraft homologation is defined by the JAA rules. Aside from well-defined exterior noise parameters and acceptable levels, unfortunately neither of them deals with cabin (interior) noise. While the vehicle cabin noise is primarily the question of ergonomics, aircraft cabin noise could even endanger the safety of flight, as being a strong masker to speech communications between the crew. The paper presents the results of several cabin noise measurements on a typical light G/A aircraft (C172R) and two completely different types of cars (medium sized, petrol engine powered city car and SUV, diesel engine powered) with the emphasis on LF audio spectra which mostly interfere with speech. The work uses some examples to present the achieved level of interior noise compared to cars and to foresee the possible need to reduce it in light aircraft, in order to realise the acceptable level of acoustic comfort.
