Ecological notes on Tabanus bromius L., and Haematopota pluvialis (L.), (Diptera: Tabanidae)of some flood areas in Croatian sections of the river Danube

A two - year study was undertaken to determine the seasonal abundance of the most commonly collected horse flies in the Monjoroš Forest, Eastern Croatia, in 2001 and 2002. Horse flies were sampled by means of Malaise traps baited with 1- octen-3-ol, acetone and ammonium hydroxide. A total of 2, 126 horse flies belonging to 17 species was identified. The two most commonly collected species were Haematopota pluvialis (L.) (40.78%) and Tabanus bromius L. (24.60%). These two species made up 65.38% of the horse fly fauna. Flight period for these two species extended from May 31 to August 22 and lasted 83 days. In this study, a single period of abundance (univoltinism) was found for Tabanus bromius during 2002. Evidence of bivoltinism was found for Haematopota pluvialis during 2002. Most specimens of both species were collected when temperatures ranged from 20, 3 to 31, 5C and relative humidity from 47 to 85%.
