Furniture design by means of digital anthropometry
This paper explores the contribution of ergonomics to furniture design using the computer and computer programs. The impacts of furniture design on the correct bodily posture of a person at work and on break from work are analyzed whereby his/her energy consumption and fatigue are minimized. For this purpose a computer program has been created that determines optimal ergonomic parameters in furniture design by using input data of various kinds of bodily posture, sex and operating height. By means of a digital 3D anthropometric movement analysis, the dimensions of the operating space of the body, e.g. arm's reach, legs’ postures, head, back etc. were determined. The furniture dimensions and space, which should be optimally utilized, were adjusted according to anthropometric body sizes.
