Reproductive strategy of annular seabream, Diplodus annularis L. in the eastern Adriatic Sea
The reproductive strategy of Diplodus annularis from eastern Adriatic Sea was studied. Total lengths of 1704 specimens ranging from 3.3 to 23.0 cm were obtained from commercial and experimental catches (2000-2002). A hundred random chosen individuals (75 females and 25 males) were taken for histological analysis. The overall male to female ratio was 1.00:1.05.Analysis of the GSI together with maturity stage data reveailed that the spawning period took place from the end of April until the end of August with peak in first part of May. In this study we confirmed rudimentary hermaphroditism (late gonochorism - both males and females develop from an immature bisexual gonad prior to sexual maturation and no sex change occurs in mature individuals) based on macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of the gonads. Total lenghts at 50% maturity were 9.0 cm for males and 10.0 cm for females. All specimens in population were fully mature above 13 cm Lt. Fecundity was fairly high, showing an increase in tendency with growth and age.
