Welding processes in modern shipbuilding industry
Paper gives insight in trends in modern shipbuilding industry which is on its way to perfection and is more and more technologically based. It could be described as high-tech shipbuilding and characterized by "tailored blanks" approach. Arc welding processes are dominant in traditional shipbuilding and they are continuously improved, modified or automated in order to increase productivity and quality. Aluminium shipbuilding is gaining on importance and high speed commercial and naval vessels become more and more dominant. Introduction of improved and novel materials along with inovative structure designs induced the development of existing or inovation of novel welding processes. They enabled higher precision manufacturing with almost no distortion, higher productivity, lower costs and faster production cycles but claimed for restructure of the production process. Advantages, disadvantages and possible applications of friction stir welding, laser hybrid welding and sophisticated robotic systems are highlihted in order to spread the information and to make initial familiarization with these rather novel welding and supportive technologies which changed the traditional way of high performance vessels production.
