Ivo Režek 1898-1979

Ivo Režek has madea significnt contribution to the to the formation of modern Croatian painting during the interwar years thru his unique stile of magic realism. Since the 1930s, he developed specific, regionally characteristic painting motifs in contact with the milieu of his home town and the surrounding area. Režek was born in Varaždin in 1898. He began his study of painting in Zagreb 1915. After the end of World War I, he continued his studies in Prague(1919-1924). He then left for Paris where he lived from 1924 to 1928 and workd in the atelier of A. Derain. He exhibited his works in a number of group exhibitions. As one of the most successful Croatian caricaturist, he had no equal in sharp, humorous satire and political caricatures (between 1934 and 1948). During later periods, after 1945, he desplayed deep psychological introspection in numerous portraits, in clear vistas of the nothern and coastal landscapes that were focused the essetial structural features of nature and its pphenomena, and in the subtle ambience surrounding small details in still-lives and intimate settings. He was a painter, graphic artist, fresco-painter, and one of the most important caricaturists and satirists of 1930s and early 1940s.
