Anthropological profile of children alpine skiers
The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological and physiological characteristics in young alpine skiers. Study was conducted on selected sample of 26 boys, alpine skiers. They were members of Croatian alpine ski teams from Zagreb and Rijeka and on average were 11.9 years old (age span 9 to 13 years). All physiological and morphological assessments were conducted at the beginning of competitive season 2001/02. Alpine skiers have similar average heights as normal population of the same age in Croatia, as well as body mass. This results support the findings on senior alpine skiers who also do not differ from normal population. Body fat values for young alpine skiers were similar but slightly lower than those reported for older skiers and almost the same as little older junior skiers. These data suggest that a desirable body composition for elite skiers may be attained by early adolescence. Absolute and relative maximal oxygen uptake were significantly higher than average values for a normal population in Croatia of the same age group. In comparison with Canadian or American junior alpine skiers, as well as adult ski competitors Croatian skiers revealed significantly worse results.
