Archaic natural terms in Veyska tongue of upland hamlets in island Krk
The vernacular natural terms in coastal harbours of island Krk are similar to the others around Kvarner Gulf, but they are very divergent in the archaic Veyska tongue of the internal upland hamlets Batomaal and Šuraye on Veyske Helami hills. These terms are divergent because of the grammatical article, ancient plurals with -je and -oj, augmentatives by prefix sion-, deminutive by mića-, pejorative by suffix -yna. They include many diphtongs and semiwovels: y, uo, oa, ie, w, kh, tj, bj, cj, sj, zj etc. The most numerous archaisms occur in the names of stars, oversea areas, relief, trees and mammals. Among 2.400 noted terms, 1/2 are similar to those in adjacent islands, 14% to those in northern Croatian mainland, 9% are of Roman origin and 8% may be early Aryan and Proto-Indoeuropean archaisms.
