Geology workshops for lower primary school children - bridging the gap in formal education and rising awareness of geological heritage

Lower primary school children generally have restricted knowledge on geology and earth processes, primary due to formal education which misses to provide earth science topics at this early stage of education. However, some children have already gained considerable knowledge, through movies and documentary films, museum visits and educational games, not to mention PC's and internet. The formal education is strongly biased by interests and knowledge of their teachers, who are generally poorly informed about geology. It is not unusual to see children with comprehensive knowledge on dynosaurs, and teachers who have hardly heard of fossils. Three years ago we have started geology workshops which are organized for school children in the age od 10 (third grade), as a supplemental activity during the "School in the nature" week when children and their teachers have outdoor classes and stay for one week in a mountain hut. This week-away teaching is organized by educational authorities in Croatia, and almost whole primary school population is involved. Our geology workshops are thus organized once a week for Zagreb school children (and their teachers) in duration of one afternoon indoors, and weather permitting - visit to abandoned mideval mine, outcrops or quarries. Typical school group counts 50-60 children, which are accompanied by three teachers. The workshop is conducted by four volonteers, who are geology students. During the summer hollidays, large groups of children spend week or two in the Red Cross hostel at the seaside, where they can also join the geology workshops which run every day. The geology workshops have started in 2001, and so far we had participation of some 4500 kids. The workshops are organized in two parts ; first we introduce the children to geology through interactive discussion which provokes their understanding of the composition of the Earth, dynamics of our planet and plate tectonics, regional paleogeography and local geology. In the second, we treat principles of sedimentation, facies, stratigraphy, and fosilization. The children are also involved in excercises where they learn about fosilization by making their own gypsum replicas of bivalves, gastropods and plants which they are free to take home. By comparing fossils from our collection with replicas, children gain understanding of preservation potential of different taxa and the need to protect fossil-bearing sites from devastation.
