Prediction of Mechanical Properties and Microstructure Distribution of Quenched and Tempered Steel Shaft
A numerical simulation of steel quenching has been developed to predict the distribution of mechanical properties of quenched and tempered specimen with complex form. The numerical simulation is based on the finite volume method, and consists of numerical calculation of temperature fields in process of cooling and simulation of mechanical properties, i.e., hardness, strength and toughness. Hardness in specimen points was estimated on the basis of time of quenching from 800  C to 500  C, i.e., by the conversion of mentioned specific time to hardness results. The time of quenching from 800  C to 500  C steel specimens was estimated by using the calibrated values of heat transfer coefficient for used quenchant. Strength and toughness properties distribution were estimated on the base of predicted steel hardness (HV) distribution. The established model has been successfully applied in computer simulation of mechanical properties of the quenched and tempered truck shaft with complex form made of two different kind of steels.
