Fractals and Formfinding - Magic with Real Numbers
The equilibrium shape determination of prestressed cable net structures termed formfinding can be achieved through classical Newton-Raphson method. The convergence strongly depends on the choice of the starting vector. For an explanation of the irregularity of the basin of attraction a series of numerical experiments was performed. It was confirmed that basins of attractions were fractals indeed. It is shown that the Newton-Raphson method can also generate fractals with real numbers.
