Business education in Croatia: the transitional challenge
Croatia was one of the best developed parts of former Yugoslavia with a well-developed education system, relevant for the economic and political system of that time. But, changes caused by the transition to market economy demanded changes in the education system, which existing Croatian education system wasn't able to follow. Consequently, young, highly educated people were not prepared for challenges in the real business world, which was partly reflected in the economic results of local companies and national economy as a whole during past decade. The purpose of this paper was to examine possibilities for business education in Croatia, their development, advantages and disadvantages of each alternative, and problems that business education system faces in the current "business knowledge creation" market. Our research has identified three basic models of business education in Croatia which differ in organization, programs and teaching methodology: formal education in public universities and colleges, international schools residing in Croatia and private business education either licensed i.e. with a degree, or non-profit organizations that organize short term seminars and training programs with no degree. Despite all disadvantages and criticism of inflexibility, bureaucracy and old-fashioned organization and teaching methodology the formal education model is prevailing. Although, other "new" models of business education are faced with numerous problems (legal, institutional, financial, marketing etc.), they are gradually becoming competitive, thus forcing the formal national business education institutions to start acting as market entities and not as state monopolies. This will hopefully increase the overall quality of business education system in Croatia.
