Biological nitrogen fixation:a key process for agricultural sustainability
This review emphasizes the importance and role of biologically fixed N2 in the concept of sustainable agriculture, and examines possibilities for major utilization of this natural process in legume production. Application of highly effective, competitive and well adapted strains for legume inoculation can significantly enhance production of these important crops. Inoculation allows economically attactive and ecologically acceptable manner of reducing the mineral nitrogen fertilization and therefore succesfull and cost effective crop production. Better understanding of rhizobial ecology and selection of inoculant strains as well as their target application regarding the environmental conditions of certain production area in one of many approaches to enhance the nitrogen fixation efficiency.
