Environmental Funds in the Mediterranean Countries
Mediterranean Basin is an unique region because of its geographical and historical position. It is an area of very sensitive environment because there are many rare species there, while many have been extinct. On the other hand, human activities are widespread and intensive there. Many tourist, industrial and agricultural activities are situated at the Mediterranean coast. Most of them are very destructive for the environment. The idea of sustainable development means compatibility of economic activities with natural environment. It seems as the only way of overcoming the problems that the Mediterranean region is facing with. Therefore, the is a strong need for the selection of human activates to maintain sustainable development. Environmental funds are efficient mechanisms of selection of those activities. They are institutions which support environmental friendly activities, and punish those destructive for environment. In general, revenues of fund are collected form harmful activates, and afterwards used to support environmental-friendly activates. An advantage of environmental funds, in comparison to the other institutions that provide the same process is their transparency. The aim of the research is to elaborate in which Mediterranean countries environmental funds are introduced, their organization and efficiency in realization of their purpose. Furthermore, criteria that funds use for the selection of activates are explored.
