Evaluation and Treatment of Disturbed Respiration During Sleep
Sleep disordered breathing is a relatively new area of medicine although snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are well known for a long time. OSA patients experience episodes of complete obstruction of the airways and cessation of the breathing during sleep which is absent in simple snoring. Beside anamnesis it is necessary to take heteroanamnesis or conversation with the bed partner who may respond to many questions instead of the snorer who is unaware of his symptoms. Oropharingeal examination provides information on the size of the tonsils, soft palate and the tongue. Polysomnography is an obligatory diagnostic method used also as a method of surgical treatment evaluation.Treatment includes: CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT Drug treatment, Snore aids, nasal and intraoral devices, The « pneumatic» splint – continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). SURGICAL TREATMENT Nasal Snoring Surgery, Palatal surgery, Surgery for retrolingual space extension, Temperature – controlled radiofrequency tissue ablation (TCRFTA)
