Croatian Dermatology and Franjo Kogoj
The development of dermatovenerology as an independent clinical discipline started in Croatia at the beginning of the 19th century, much as in the whole Austo-Hungarian Monarchy. The first dermatovenerological department was founded in Zagreb in 1894, as the Third Department for patients with diseases of the skin, genitalia, eyes, throat, nose and ears. In 1921 a dermatovenerology chair was established and Vladimir Terebinski was named the first professor of Dermatovenerology (July 5th 1921). However, he never arrived in Zagreb and finally gave his resign in 1923. Josip Šavnik was the second to be invited, and was appointed professor of dermatovenerology on May 23rd, 1923. Working in Zagreb he made all efforts to organize dermatovenerology as a modern clinical discipline as well as to advance teaching. Accidentally infected with typhus by one of his patients, Šavnik fell victim to his profession on July 16th 1924. Franjo Kogoj took over and since 1926 he started out as acting head of the department of dermatology in Zagreb. Kogoj´s period was soon crowned with the opening of the dermatovenerological department in 1928 which he lead until his retirement in 1965. He was a harbinger of a new epoch in Croatian dermatology in which taking biopsies became a routine and an every day procedure.
