Clinical relevance of CAST-ELISA test in detection of drugs and food additives allergy

There us no doubt that allergy to drugs and food additives are complex diseases. The diagnosis of such hypersensitivity might encounter sdome difficulties. All current tests, in vivo or in vitro (skin test, determination of specific IgE, lymphocyte proliferation tests or provocation test) are capable of detecting drugs and food additives allergy, but tests differ in their sensitivity, specificity, safety, and reproducibility. For this reason the aim of the present study was to determine whether cellular antigen stimulation test (CAST) which use is not only restricted to IgE mediated allergic reactions may be a useful diagnostic method in detection hypersensitivity to drugs and food additives. The suty group comprised 151 patients (37 male and 114 female) with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to drugs. The clinical reactions were urticaria and/or angioedema (80) patients, dermatitis atopica (31 patients), medicamentous exanthema (31 patients) and rhinitis (9 patients). The age of the patients ranged from 1 to 71 (means 37) years. Although clinical evaluation of the CAST-ELISA test is still in progress these results demonstrate that CAST-ELISA used in confirmation of the clinical manifestation of drug allergy is more sensitive than in detection of hypersensitivity to food additives.
