TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENTS
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of unknown etiology involving the central nervous system. MS is characterized by a relapsing-remitting or progressive course and a pathologic triad of CNS inflammation, demyelinization, and gliosis (scarring). Certain clinical manifestations affect the orofacial region. The aim of this study was to determine frequency of TMD subtype according to RDC/TMD among MS patients. Methods: Examinees in this study were 50 patients suffering from MS, who were treated during their disease for at least one time in Clinic Hospital Center Rijeka, Clinic for Neurology. Control group was formed by individual matching method, which comprise one healthy individual per one patient of same age and sex. The clinical examination of stomatognathic system included determination of the range of mandibular movements, assessment of TMJ function, the recording of pain during movements and during palpation of TMJ and masticatory muscles. All examinations were performed according to the RDC/TMD.Results: Eighty-two percent (82%) of the subjects with MS had at least one symptoms of dysfunction compared with 24% of the subjects in the healthy control group. In the present study, pain, pain during mouth opening, difficulty with mouth opening and TMJ sounds were more commonly reported in the MS group than in control group. MS group showed much higher prevalence of all three groups RDC/TMD diagnoses. The highest difference between two groups was in group I (myofascial pain) TMDs, MS=24% ; Control group=0 (p=0, 001).Conclusion: This study shows a statistically significant excess of temporomandibular disorders among MS patients compared with control group.
