Claude Levi-Strauss
One of the most original and prolific thinkers of the 20th century, the French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss is associated with the development of a school of thought in cultural anthropology known as structuralism. Challenging the dominating empirical, positivistic, and functionalist tradition in social sciences, he viewed cultures as systems and elaborated the principles of the structuralist method largely based on the already existing structuralist linguistic tradition. A short biography of Levi-Strauss' life follows after a thorough discussion of his work and ideas.
