Wilhelm von Humboldt
The most distinguished linguistic scholar of the 19th century, politician, diplomat, and humanist, K.W.F. von Humboldt is generally considered to be the founder of general linguistics as a science that aims at the quest for the essence of linguistic phenomenon itself through the analysis and comparison of different languages. His language philosophy always stressed the importance of language as a dynamic process, the importance of the innere Sprachform, and the ability of any language to influence thought processes of its speakers. No matter how controversial some of his ideas regarding language typology and classification might seem today, his contributions are still significant in this respect.
