Yield load solutions for X-shaped weldment with present mechanical heterogeneity

A welded joint is a critical part of any welded component with respect to defects, geometry, misalignments and mechanical anisotropy. Different defect assessment procedures (f. i. R6 or EFAM ETM-MM) demand an estimation of the plastic yield load. This paper includes the limit load solutions for the single edged fracture toughness specimen subjected to bending with present X-shaped weld groove geometry and materials dissimilarity. Finite element (FE) studies were performed for the characteristic case, when the weld joint centre located crack propagates from overmatch (OM) to undermatch (UM) region. The corresponding fully plastic yield load solutions were obtained directly from the FE analysis for the conditions of the plane strain and plane stress as well.
