Physical activity in obesity and diabetes

This study assesed the level of physical activity in overweight and obese subjects, and overweight and obese patients with Type II diabetes mellitus. It also investigated benefits of physical activity on anthropometric and metabolic parameters and blood pressure in studied groups. Physical activity level, body weight, body height, body mass index, waist-to- hip ratio, blood pressure, lipoprotein, creatinin, glucose and HbA1C concentrations in the blood and albuminuria-to-creatinin ratio of 136 subjects were measured during their out- patient visit. No difference in physical activity was found among the four groups of subjects. However, the level of physical activity of patients with T2DM is significantly lower then the one of general population. The Baecke´s questionnare was found to estimate the effects of physical activity on anthropometric and metabolic parameters and blood pressure better than the LRC PA questionnare. In conclusion both questionnares are valuable aids in the estimation of physical activity level and its benefits in overweight and obese patients with T2DM.
