Influence of Railway on the Development of Advanced Transportation Technologies
The development of cargo flows in international transport and new requirements regarding quality and speed of transport service realisation have required the implementation of modern transport technologies, and especially container and piggyback technologies. In modern concept of cargo transportation, railway must become the carrier of containerised cargo transport, as well as piggyback transport. This leads to the founding of various specialised companies with the aim of improving the mentioned transport technologies. The developed west– European countries pay special attention to the development of railway traffic. Such attitude to railway, reflected primarily in substantial financial assistance, changes the railway and modernises it in the technical and technological and organisational sense. The managements of these railways are especially interested in new transport technologies since they estimate that these cargo transport technologies will be the most important part of their offer on the transportation market. The implementation and development of piggyback transport technologies are stimulated also by the European economic community due to their advantages, such as reducing road traffic congestion in Europe, improving environmental protection, better use of railway infrastructure, lower energy consumption, lower costs and higher transport speeds. The paper analyses the current situation of implementing advanced transport technologies and tendencies of their development with special attention to the role of railway in this development. Since the share of transportation services is increasing in road traffic and decreasing in the field of railway transport, the current attitude has to be substituted by a more modern approach to solving these problems. The promotion of intermodality represents a means of business policy which allows a systemic approach to traffic. Traffic services are offered as mode– independent connections from door to door. They are based on a series of feasible alternative modes of transport by the new efficient implementation of the transport system. This reduces the transport costs and provides the possibility of realising added value.
