Evaluation of taurodontism in Krapina Neanderthals
Assessment of taurodontism (T) in Krapina Neanderthals and comparison of the internal morphology of Krapina and recent mandibular molars were the aims of this study. The sample consisted of 27 Neanderthal and 36 contemporary molars that were traced from periapical and panoramic radiographs. T was estimated on the tracings according to the methods proposed by Shifman & Chanannel (1978) and Holt & Brook (1979). According to Shifman & Chanannel’ s method, T was diagnosed in 74.1% of the Krapina molars and the frequency increased from 36.4% of M1 to all of M2 and M3. According to the method proposed by Holt & Brook, only one M1 was diagnosed differently, so the frequency of T was 70.4%. Relative size and relative depth of the pulp chamber proved to be significantly higher in the Krapina molars. Both methods used in this research were found suitable for assessing T, however the concordance between them should be tested on a large sample of the contemporary population.
