Epidemiological Features of Suicida Among Alcohol Addictions in thhe Republic of Croatia in the Period of Years 1997-2003
The aim of this paper was to investigate the features of suicide in population of alcoholics according to following variables: suicide rate according to age, sex, education, work status, marital status, manner and place of committing the suicide, relapses of suicidal behavior, existence of suicide notes and the region of the Republic of Croatia (continent/coast ; war-affected/was not affected by war). The analysis has been done using data obtained from Registrar of Suicides of the Ministry of Interior Affairs (MUP), of the Republic of Croatia in the period of years 1997-2003. The Registrar of Suicides of MUP is a very special source of data, because it is made based on the investigation carried out by certified MUP officials about the cause and reason of death in cases of sudden death, violent death or similar. In this period, 5 977 suicides were committed, and in that number, alcoholics were represented with 552 suicides (9.23%). The ratio of alcoholics vs. non-alcoholics is 10:1. The statistical analysis of our data has shown that the persons who commit suicide are mostly married males, of lower education, unemployed. The most of the suicides are committed in spring or summer, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 1-6 PM. Alcoholics commit most suicides by hanging themselves in their house or garden, do not leave the farewell notes and did not have previous suicide attempts. Alcoholics from the continental part of Croatia are represented with 92, 6% among the alcoholics who commit suicide in the Republic of Croatia. Also, the suicides are more frequent in regions which have not been affected by war.
