Pi-pulse Theory Extended: Analytical Generalization Beyond the Two-level Systems
The necessary ingredient of analytic pulse design for the coherent control of the population in a general discrete quantum system is the knowledge of the precise pulse duration. To that end, the well known Pi-pulse expression is generally used. However, in the case of the population transfer in a general many level quantum system - as opposed to that in a simple two-level one - some corrections need to be introduced into standard $\Pi$-pulse theory expression if the correct value of the pulse duration is to be obtained. This correction is due to the interference of the remainder of the system with the population transfer between any two arbitrary levels between which the population transfer is to be achieved. This paper gives the full analytical derivation of that correction, demonstrates its validity and presents its limitations.
