The penetration index as a measure of the bitumen temperature susceptibility
The penetration index represents a quantitative measure of the temperature susceptibility of bitumen. Knowing the penetration index it is possible to forsee the behaviour of bitumen in its application. This paper outlines the research results of the penetration index for two types of road construction bitumen produced from various crudes ranging from API 31 to 37. By an additional mixing of the vacuum residue of various types of crude oil and its oxidation a series of 121 samples has been tested. The physico-chemical properties of bitumen have been determined. The penetration at two temperatures being 5°C and 25°C has been measured. The values of the penetration index Ip for the mentioned temperatures are as follows: Sample 1. BIT-70/100 Ip is -2.75 to -1.75 BIT-50/70 Ip is -1.75 to -0.69 2. BIT-70/100 Ip is -2.38 to -1.58 BIT-50/70 Ip is -2.39 to -1.17 3. BIT-70/100 Ip is -1.80 to -0.96 BIT-50/70 Ip is -2.42 to -0.90 4. BIT-70/100 Ip is -2.81 to -1.15 BIT-50/70 Ip is -1.91 to -1.59 5. BIT-70/100 Ip is -1.17 to -0.96 BIT-50/70 Ip is -1.13 to -0.69 6. BIT-70/100 Ip is -2.65 to -1.89 BIT-50/70 Ip is -1.75 to -1.30
