Speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) by Ion-Exchange TLC
Continous use of chromium salts in a great number of industries has caused its dispersion in aquatic and soil environment. Chromium is commonly found in polluted soil and water in two oxidation states (III and VI). Analysis of these samples often requires speciation of Cr in order to distinguish between the toxic hexavalent form and the less toxic tervalent one. There are only few analytical methods for the simultaneous determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in complex matrix (e.g. polarography). In the work presented a TLC method with speciation capabillity for chromium has been studied. Improvment in the selectivity of TLC was achieved by changing the chromatographic properties of the support by phisical modification. This method, involving solid cation exchanger Amberlite IRP-69 mixed with microcrystaline cellulose has been successfully utilized for the separation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). A number of solvent systems (solutions of HCl, HNO3, H3PO4 and H2SO4, respectively in concentrations from 0.5 to 3.0 mol/L) and reagents for visualization (H2O2, 1, 5-diphenylcarbazide, alizarine S, dimethyl-glyoxime, 8-hydroxyquinoline) have been tested.
