Synthesis of Forsterite from Aluminosilicate Precursors
Using as starting materials the powder mixture of NH4-exchanged zeolite A and MgO, and powder mixture of NH4-exchanged mordenite and MgO, crystalline ceramic materials were obtained [1]. In order to produce a homogeneous mixture, conventional ball milling was applied causing the amorphization of NH4-exchanged zeolites and reduction of the particle size of MgO [2]. Solid-state transformation of the mixtures after heating at temperature of their phase transformations in the interval of 800oC-1000oC for 3 h yielded crystalline forsterite (Mg2SiO4) with possibly minor amounts of sapphirine (Mg4Al10Si2=23) and spinel (MgAl2O4) in the first case, and crystalline forsterite with traces of enstatite (MgSiO3) in the second case. X-ray diffraction [3], FT-IR spectroscopy [4] and Raman spectroscopy [5] were used for the product characterization.
