Estrogen replacement therapy-a review of its potential benefits in neurology
Most women take estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), primarily because of unpleasant symptoms of menopause (hot flushes, night sweats). A minor proportion of women take it for osteoporosis, however, neurologic benefits are less known. This paper reviws the potential benefits of ERT in neurology, primarily in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and secondariliy in slowing the aging of cerebral vessels. Mental changes, improvement of insomnia, and effects on depression, are presented.
