Glutathione and lipid peroxidation in blood and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in red blood cells of chickens during hypothermia and posthypothermia
Changes of glutathione concentrations and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive products of lipid peroxidation) in the blood and the activity of G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) in the erythrocytes of chickens were examined in hypothermia and posthypothermia. Blood glutathione concentrations remained unchanged in hypothermia, while TBARS significantly decreased. On the first day of posthypothermia a marked decrease of glutathione concentrations was detected and TBARS significantly increased in relation to the hypothermic period. On the third day of posthypothermia, glutathione concentrations slightly increased, but TBARS significantly decreased. The G6PD activity was progressively decreasing and this decrease was significant on the third day of posthypothermia.
