Susceptibility To Hydrogen Induced Cracking Of Weld Beads On High-Strength Structural Steel

Engineers often have to deal with repair of weldments after they had been put into service [1-6]. The service environment may change the structure, independent of whether the problems were originated during the initial manufacture (cold and hot cracks, inclusions, porosity, etc.) or during subsequent service (wear, damage, stress-corrosion cracking, etc.). Special care should be devoted to environment sensitive fracture in hydrogen evolving corrosion media as welded constructions are sensitive to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) [7-9]. Hydrogen absorbed in metal diffuses to the regions of local strain concentration created in the matrix ; that is, the irregularity- matrix interfaces. Progressive accumulation of hydrogen at the interfaces leads to embrittlement. In the case where the material characteristics have been changed by absorbed hydrogen, the welding procedures used during the original construction may no longer be appropriate. Thus, it is necessary to create a new welding procedure to define the specific details for an appropriate repair. Hence, this study was undertaken with the objective of characterizing the influence of hydrogen on the tensile strength and ductility of a welded high strength structural steel by applying electrochemical charging. The main aim was to investigate the suitability of this testing method for the study of the HIC of welded joints in hydrogen promoting environments.
