Structural and magnetotransport properties of Co-doped La_0.5Sr_0.5TiO_3 epitaxial thin films

The search for highly-spin polarized sources to be implemented in spintronic devices is an active field of research. One approach is to dope with magnetic elements a non-magnetic host showing the required transport properties. Here we report on the structural and magnetotransport properties of Co-doped (up to 3%) La_0.5Sr_0.5TiO_3 (LSTO(Co)) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. All samples appear to be ferromagnetic with T_c well above room temperature. X-ray diffraction and Auger spectroscopy do not show any traces of Co-clustering, suggesting that the ferromagnetism is intrinsic to the LSTO(Co) compound. We have performed an exhaustive study of the dependence of the magnetotransport properties on the oxygen pressure at deposition (P_O2) and on the Co-content. We have found that the samples are metallic, albeit the resistivity is remarkably dependent on the growth pressure.
