The impact of carotid stenosis in ischemic stroke
Carotid artery disease is the cause of the one third of strokes, especially in younger individuals. Ultrasound is the most important diagnostic tool in the estimation of this condition, although some consider angiography to be a standard. Nevertheless, ultrasonography plays an important role in the estimation of redistribution of heamodynamics as well as in future management. In males, atherosclerosis is the most common couse of occlusive carotid disease, with hyperlipoproteinaemia, hypertension and cigarette smoking as risk factors. This risk factors are easily preventible by lifestyle changes, medical treatment when necessary and carotid endarterectomy to be considered in patients with advanced carotid disease. The timing of carotid endarterecatomy is important. In females immune diorders should be looked for, and appropriate treatment for these diseases should reduce the risk of stroke.
