The Elevator and Depressor Muscle Activity in Complete Denture Wearers and in Dentate Subjects

The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of muscle activity at various mandibular positions in groups of people with different ages and dental status. Seventy subjects participated in this study, and they were divided in three groups. The experimental group consisted of 30 edentulous subjects, the first control group consisted of 20 healthy young dentate individuals, and the second control group consisted of 20 healthy older dentate individuals. Surface EMG recordings were obtained from the left and right anterior temporal muscle, the left and right masseter muscle and from the submandibular group in the region of the anterior belly of the digastrics muscle on the left and right side. EMG registrations were taken in the following order: maximal voluntary contraction at the intercuspal position, maximal opening, protrusion with the teeth at an edge-to-edge position, maximal protrusion, lateral eccentric positions with the teeth at an edge-to-edge position and maximal lateral positions of the mandible. The results indicate that age had a significant effect on the muscle activity in different mandibular positions especially on elevator muscles (P<0.05). It became clear that elevator and depressor muscles need stronger activation by the ageing. The most prominent differences in elevator (P<0.05) and depressor (P<0.05) muscle activity were due to the complete dentures wearing.
