Influence of Different Soil Tillage Systems on Yield, Energy and Labour Requirement in Spring Barley Production

Five various reduced soil tillage systems were compared with conventional system in spring barley (Hordeum sativum L.) production on silty clay loam in Croatia. Results showed that reduced tillage systems without mouldboard plough achieved significantly higher yields than conventional tillage system. The highest yield were achieved by chisel plough with power harrow and two passes of multitiller which were 20% greater. The most reduced tillage system, two passes of multitiller achieved 40-50% lower energy requirement and close on 80% lower labour requirement in comparison to conventional tillage system. Tillage systems with chisel plough and powered implements were bigger energy consumers than conventional system but these systems enabled close on 35% lower labour requirement per hectare and even up to 50% lower labour requirement per tonne of yield. Tillage systems with mouldboard plough and powered implements were in comparison to conventional tillage system with respect to energy requirement almost equal, but were more favourable due to lower labour requirement.
