Chipping of forest residual after final cut of pedunculate oak stand
After the final cut, and in accordance with the provisions of the Croatian "Forest Act", forest residues (branches, parts of crown) have to be removed from the ground so as to allow unobstructed natural regeneration, and exceptionally they can be piled so that at least 80% of the area has to be left free. As a common practice, the local rural residents remove the forest residual and then get the processed firewood at a considerably lower price – lower by about 50%. As the local population is less interested in the use of firewood due to intensive gasification of the east, lowland part of Croatia, the possibility of mechanisation of this procedure by chipping has been investigated. The research has been carried out after the final cut in pedunculate oak forest, which is characteristic of this part of Croatia. The research objective was the analysis of ergonomic, energy, ecological and economic features of forest residual chipping and scattering of chips around the forest area by a Seppi TR100 chipper operated by two Steyr adapted farming tractors, the so-called harvesting tractors.
