Metonymic Links for 'Master Metaphor'

On the example of the metaphors EVENTS ARE THINGS and ACTIVITIES ARE TRANSFERS which are operative in the number of the verbo-nominal constructions of the type 'have, make, take, give'+a+noun we shall attempt to show how a process of metonymic elaboration may lead to a hugher level of abstractedness or the so called 'master metaphor' (Kövecses 200: 61). Metonymic mappings lead to the creation of a more generic level of metaphor by introducing a PART FOR WHOLEmapping which is one of the most productive cognitive processes in general. The 'master metaphor' ABSTRACT ENTITITES ARE PHYSICAL ENTITIES serves, on the other hand, as a foundation stone for numerous metonymic mappings of the opposite direction, offering various subdomains for different mappings which suit well not only this kind of lexical structures, but is a source for many additional creative linguistic units.
