Dosadašnje stanje istraženosti travnjačke vegetacije u Hrvatskoj
Phytosociological research into grasslands in accordance with the Braun-Blanquet methodology has been carried out in Croatia for more than 75 years. Since the first phytosociological papers of Horvatić (1927, 1930) and Horvat (1930, 1931), which laid the foundations of vegetation science in Croatia, more than 450 references have been published, relating to various aspects of grassland research, in many of them plant communities being the basic subject of the research. On the basis of literature sources and data derived from the author’ s own field research, during the past several years a phytosociological database of the grassland vegetation of Croatia has been prepared. The programme TURBOVEG was used to input and save data. To date 3254 relevés have been entered, more than 3000 of them geocoded as well. In the database there are 107, 892 records of plant taxa – finding sites. A number of attributes are associated with each relevé, some of the most basic of which are: literature source of the data, date, locality, coordinates, plot area, exposition, inclination, vegetation cover, name of the association and so on. Vegetation grassland in Croatia shows great biological diversity. To date about 110 grassland vegetation associations have been noted in Croatia. A small number of associations are not at all represented by relevés, or only by synthetic tables. The phytosociological database contains relevés that belong in 87 associations. The associations for which there are the most relevés are: Arrhenatheretum elatioris (490 relevés), Bromo-Cynosuretum cristati (321 relevés), Stipo-Salvietum officinalis (149 relevés) and so on. The existing phytosociological database covers 1966 plant taxa, the most frequent grassland species being: Plantago lanceolata, Trifolium pratense, Ranunculus acris, Holcus lanatus, Lotus corniculatus, and some others. There are numerous advantages to a phytosociological database. Data collected and processed in a single place constitute the basis for future scientific research, serve for an estimation of the economic value of individual types of grassland vegetation, and enable persuasive grounds to be provided for the protection of grassland plant species and habitats.
