Satisfaction with body weight and actual body weight in young adults and postmenopausal women with normal and low bone mineral density
Introduction It is widely assumed that body image dissatisfaction is increasing, particularly in females, as a consequence of social stigmatism of obesity. The aim of the study was to compare body weight satisfaction with body shape (apple or pear) and actual body weight, i.e. body mass index (BMI) according to gender (among young adults) and according to age (between young and postmenopausal women). Methods In a survey to assess their personal body weight satisfaction, participants were asked if they were satisfied with their body weight, wanted to lose or gain weight, or had no opinion. Subjects were young adults (n=663 ; mean age 21.8 years) and postmenopausal women with normal (n=127) and low bone mineral density (n=443). BMI and waist to hip ratio (WHR) were calculated from measured anthropometry. Results More than half of postmenopausal women and among young adults, 22.4 and 29.6 % of males and females respectively, want to lose weight. Subjects who want to lose weight, do have average BMI above 25 kg/m2 with exception in young females where average BMI for those who want to lose weight was 22.1 kg/m2. The highest number of subjects who want to gain weight was among young men (13.7 %). More of apple shaped than pear shaped postmenopausal women want to lose weight (63.2 vs. 50.9 %). Conclusion Greater body weight dissatisfaction was observed in postmenopausal women than in young adults. In subjects that reported they wanted to lose weight personal BMI was the highest in postmenopausal women and the lowest in young women.
