Trophic indicators and the state of waterbodies within Kopački rit Nature Park (Croatia) in 2003 and 2004
Kopački rit Nature Park is a flooded area situated in the north-eastern part of the Republic of Croatia, in the corner between two rivers – the Drava river and the Danube. This specific area has been under comprehensive hydrobiological research since 1997. Physical and chemical, as well as biological water parameters have been measured monthly at five standard stations - waterway from Sakadaš to the Danube: 1. Sakadaš lake, 2. the Čonakut channel, 3. the mouth of Kopačko lake, 4. the central part of Kopačko lake, and 5. the Hulovo channel, with the aim to monitor the trophic state of this complex wetland ecosystem. From 1997 to 2002, acording to CTSI (Chl a), CTSI (SD), CTSI (T-P), as well as bottom dissolved oxygen concentration, the trophic state of the investigated lakes and channels fluctuated from mesotrophy to strong eutrophy (CTSI between 50 and 76). In 2002 and 2003, water in the investigated area was nitrogen limited (T-N/T-P varied from 2.81 to 5.90). During 2003, the extreme low water level caused partial drying up of the Čonakut channel and the Hulovo channel, main water connection between the Danube and the wetland area. Recorded values of total phosphorus (between 0.138 mgL-1 in Sakadaš lake and 0.656 mgL-1 in the Hulovo channel) and total nitrogen (between 1.236 mgL-1 in Sakadaš lake and 1.49 mgL-1 at the mouth of Kopačko lake) were lower, at all stations, in 2003 and 2004 than in previous years. A yearly T-N/T-P ratio in 2004 showed a shift from nitrogen dependency to phosphorous dependency, especially in the Hulovo channel (T-N/T-P = 22.51). Also, relationship between CTSI variables, CTSI(T-P) > CTSI (Chl a) = CTSI (SD), at all stations except the Hulovo channel, indicated conditions where algae dominate light attenuation and where nitrogen limitation and zooplankton grazing limit algal biomass. The Hulovo channel was phosphorous limited, and there were non-algal particulates or color dominate light attenuation: CTSI (T-P) = CTSI (SD) > CTSI (Chl a).
